Downderry The Shore 12

Frank Sambells gave this information. The old picture post cards of Downderry "The Shore" picture #12 of Main Road and the Old Cottages" #1 with the donkey cart. I am very familiar with this donkey cart photo since I have one hanging in my living room. The picture depicts my great grandmother Mary Sambells receiving her laundry from Mrs. Edith Smith. As was the custom, Edith Smith is raising a tin jug to receive payment for her services. This picture was taken by J. A Coath of Liskeard where my great grandmother was born. Mr. Coath had a photography shop in Liskeard and the family produced many fine and well staged photos of life in these communities. I suspect that the donkey cart photo is early 1890''s and "The Shore" picture was earlier when telegraph lines were first installed in the 1870''s.
